Segregation in California 1950's?

I was cleaning out some of my mothers things that survived a fire and found a 1958 yearbook from Luther Burbank Jr. High School in Los Angeles, Ca. While my kids and I were looking through it - we were quick to notice not one African American student or teacher in the yearbook. Was there segregation in California schools back then? In Los Angeles? History books on civil rights and black history here usually focus on the Southern States. What was California like back then?
